As parents, we all wearing many hats these days and that can be very stressful. We all just became chefs making 3 square meals a day, full-time daycare, especially if you are working from home and teachers, we all just became full-time teachers. Learning at home can be overwhelming. What do I teach, what sites do I use. Well, I have a part of the solution for you. As a former teacher, I have used so many of these fun website with my students.
I’ve created a short summary of each website because I know you are super busy these days. Most of these will be familiar to your child so take a few minutes to check out each site with your child. The greatest part about these learning at home websites is that they are all free or free for a limited time.
BrainPop
Brainpop is a website that teaches a bunch of topics from science to reading. Each topic has a video, questions and answers and games that relate to the video.
Edhelper
Edhelper allows you to print worksheets on every topic. It’s free while school is out.
Epic
Epic is a great place for students to read books online, just for fun. This is a great app for daily reading. Remember 20 minutes a day is the magic number. This site is super popular and I am sure your child’s teacher has heard of it and is probably already using it. This site is offering free memberships to parents for 30 days, but teachers can sign your child up for this site until June 30th. If, your child’s teacher is not using this site ask them to sign up . It only takes a few munites and I am sure your child’s teachr will be greatful.
Hand2mind@home
Hand2mind at home has a variety of ways for you to teach your child at home. This site has daily schedules based on your child’s age and lots of youtube videos that teach your child concepts like common and proper nouns. This site is always free.
Legends of Learning
Legends of learning, this was really fun, I actually played this one myself. If your child loves video games, they’ll love this. Legends of Learning mashes math and video games together. This game has cool graphic and awesome audio and gives you a real video game feel with the benefit of math practice. This site gives parents two options. You can pick certain skills you want your child to learn or allow them to learn at their own pace. This site is free for a limited time.
MEL Science
Mel science has a great collection of science videos and articles. All of these experiments will require adult supervision but they are really cool science experiments. Each experiment has a material list and explains the science behind each activity.
Shepard Software
Shepard software has 100’s of interactive games and activities. The games range from preschool to college chemistry. This site is always free.
ABCya
Abcya.com is designed for kids from Prek to 6th grade. Abcya has high-quality games with bold graphics that your children will absolutely love! Abcya is free for their basic site.
Funbrain
Funbrain is like 4 sites in one. It has games, books, videos and a special playground section called Funbrain Jr. There are also popular books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Jody Moody that your child can read online. Funbrain is always free.
Nasa@home
Nasa@home has fun activities to do at home, videos and science games and fun printables. books,
Scholastic Classroom Magazine
Scholastic classroom magazine has 4 weeks of fun lessons. They include virtual field trips, fun book reviews, interesting articles, and there are also videos from Author Dav Pikey, from the Captain Underpants series, teaching how to draw characters from his comic books.
Not only will these sites keep your students engaged and learning but you can use these learning at home sites to give you a few minutes if you need to get work done or to just take your child away from the tv for a while. Check out our 10 activities for staying in.
One thing I would like parents to know is, it’s going to be okay. You don’t have to teach skills like your child’s teacher or use fancy materials. The best thing you can do for your child is to continue exposing them to learning every single day.
